Offshore

The development of ocean wind power ("offshore wind power") offers numerous advantages and is regarded as key in reaching society’s ambitious goals on renewable energies: Wind velocities are higher and more reliable at sea, and larger areas can be used for construction far enough out at sea so as not to mar the horizon.

On the other hand, offshore wind farm planning presents a major technical challenge: wind power facilities must be specifically designed for use at sea; they must rest on foundations which are specially designed for the respective sea depths and tides, and they require that cables be laid over long distances under water.

wpd has expertise in all stages of an offshore project: development, procurement, construction and operation & maintenance.

wpd has been active in the development of offshore wind farms since 2000. Already six of the projects developed by the wpd group with over 2,000 MW altogether have been approved and will be built jointly with financially strong market players. Our team is working overall in Germany, Sweden, Finland, France and Italy on an offshore pipeline of about 10 gigawatts.

Procurement and Construction of offshore wind farms is wpd’s recent focus as wpd is the appointed project manager for the procurement and construction of the German offshore projects Baltic I, Baltic II, OWP Hohe See and He Dreiht. EnBW bought the permitted projects from wpd in May 2008 and is relying on wpd’s further expertise for the realization of the projects. wpd’s team contains of experts with experience of several years in the offshore industry including the construction of offshore projects like Beatrice (UK), Alpha Ventus (GER) and Lillgrunden (SE).

Operation & Maintenance strategies are subject of wpd’s work on the above mentioned projects Baltic I and Baltic II. The projects are very different in size and distance to the coast and will require different O&M concepts.
